A guide to taming beefalo as quickly as possible
In this guide we will go through the optimal steps to train and domesticate a beefalo within the shortest amount of time. It is recommended to do this during mid to late game as the process requires a brush (which can be crafted in winter) and an established base with plenty of resources.
Things We’ll Need:
- Beefalo Bell (3 gold, 1 flint)
- Beefalo Hat (1 beefalo horn, 8 beefalo wool)
- Salt Lick (4 nitre, 2 boards)
- Saddle (4 beefalo wool, 4 pig skin, 4 gold)
- Brush (1 steel wool, 1 walrus tusk, 1 gold)
- Crockpot (3 cut stone, 6 charcoal, 6 twigs)
- A few full stacks of twigs
Keep these items handy as they will be crucial to domesticating your beefalo quickly. Cook up 4 twigs in the crock pot to make “Steamed Twigs” These, along with regular twigs will be your beefalo’s main source of food. Place a few salt licks near your base before heading out to obtain your beefalo. (This will keep your beefalo occupied while you make stops at base for cooking etc.)
Obtaining Your Beefalo
Bring the beefalo bell, hat, saddle, brush, a full stack of twigs, and a few steamed twigs with you as you head out to the grassy savannah biome to find beefalo.
Once you find the beefalo you want to tame, feed it five twigs and it will start following you. Then use the beefalo bell on the beast to name it and bond it to you. While holding the bell in your inventory, the beefalo will follow you anywhere, including the underground caves! (This will be important later) Next, feed the beef one steamed twigs, brush it, and saddle it. Now that you have your newly acquired beef, we can move on.
Domesticating Simplified
From this point on you are going to want to spend as much time on your beefalo as possible until it is fully domesticated. At first you will only be able to ride for about 15 seconds until it will decide to buck you off. Once it does this feed it another twig or two and immediately hop back on. The more you ride your beefalo at this point, the longer you will be able to ride it for.
If your beefalo starts to beg for food, feed it a steamed twigs. Brush and feed your beefalo a steamed twigs first thing in the morning every morning to increase its obedience and to stock up on some free beefalo wool. Keep these beefalo wool as a handy reminder as to which day in training you are on since you are diligent and brush once every day. (Example: 7 beefalo wool in your inventory means that you are on day 7 of the taming process)
Collect twigs as you ride your beefalo throughout the Constant to help keep its hunger satiated. When you need to spend an extended time off of your beefalo, make sure it is well feed and not begging for food. (Examples: Mining, cooking at base camp, chopping wood)
*DO NOT OVERFEED YOUR BEEFALO*
As this will lead to a longer domestication process. Beefalo will do a farting animation when they are close to being overfeed
Beefalo in Heat
Beefalo become a problem whenever they go into heat. Beefs that aren’t domesticated will go into heat during spring time. This dramatically reduces the time before it bucks you off and is aggressive to just about everything. It’s just an all around pain to deal with during the springtime so I would advise against domesticating during spring or starting the process during late winter.
There is also a random chance that beefalo will go into heat during other times of the year and this may disrupt the taming process. Equip a beefalo hat if this happens during domestication. To combat this, bring your beefalo into the nearest cave and then exit back out. This affects the in game “heat” mechanic for the beefalo and should be done at least once during domestication.
Beefalo Will Be Domesticated at 15 Days
Your beefalo will change its appearance once it is fully domesticated depending on how you trained it during this process. It will also stop doing its begging animation. The beef’s stats will change and its timer before it bucks you off while riding has been increased dramatically.
And that’s all there is too it! By riding as much as possible, feeding them steamed twigs when hungry (2-3 regular twigs when bucked off), and brushing them once daily, your beefalo will become fully domesticated in just 15 in game days! But that’s easier said than done, right?
